Core Development Program
As an extension of the National Hockey League (NHL) and National Hockey League Players’ Association’s (NHLPA) Player Development Program, the NHL and NHLPA today announced the launch of the NHL/NHLPA Core Development Program. Core Development Program (CDP) aims to help NHL Players become better professionals both on and off of the ice.
Through engagement in CDP, the NHL and NHLPA aim to promote and facilitate healthy and productive lives for all Players during their NHL careers, and will help them transition to life and their post-playing careers. The launch of CDP coincides with the opening month of the 2016-17 season. It was created to provide NHL Players with information, resources and services to enhance their career experience. The goal of CDP is two-fold: (1) to provide Players with an opportunity to develop a path to success off the ice; and (2), to provide Players with a customized strategy to enhance their overall performance during their playing career. CDP is designed to create opportunities to identify or complete educational endeavors, augment financial goals, build networking skills, establish key professional networks, and create strong philanthropic, business and career foundations.

The BreakAway Program
The BreakAway Program, formerly known as the Life After Hockey Program, is supported and funded by the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA). The BreakAway Program is administered by the NHL Alumni Association, and work in conjunction with the Ted Rogers School of Management in the development of customized programs, courses and career services for current and former NHL players.
The Ted Rogers School of Management is Canada’s largest undergraduate management school and offers a diverse range of business courses that can be completed on a flexible schedule, both in-class and online.
If you have played at least one game in the NHL and are a registered member of the NHL Alumni or NHL Players’ Association you can utilize BreakAway Program services. You will join hundreds of current and former players who have already participated in the BreakAway Program and gain valuable skills for life after hockey.
These services have been developed over a period of five years with direct contributions from members of the NHL Alumni, the NHL, the NHL Players’ Association and the player/ clients who have participated in the program as well as feedback from Breakaway Committee members: Pat Flatley, Mark Napier, Brian O’Neill and Dr. Brian Shaw.
